PJC's student newspaper, The Corsair, has
again won the top prize in statewide press competition. For the 15th
time in the past 18 years, The Corsair has captured the General Excellence award for community college papers at schools with large enrollments.
That is the equivalent of an athletic team winning the state
championship almost every year since 1990! Congratulations to the student editors and to Student Publications Manager Chris Drain, who advises The Corsair.
The Florida Community College Press Association presented the awards Oct. 17 in Sarasota.
Also winning big was PJC's new student magazine, Issue. Competing against well-financed magazines from south and central Florida colleges, Issue contributors took home two first-place awards (for nonfiction and design of the contents page) and one third-place award (for fiction).
"That's pretty freakin' good for a bunch of kids who managed all this
in just a couple of months and did every lick of work themselves," said Issue adviser Todd Neuman, an associate professor of English who accompanied the students to the FCCPA meeting.
Prizes for general excellence are given to only three magazines, and Issue almost made the cut. It placed fourth in overall points for the General Excellence magazine award.
